Barbara Broekman
Barbara Broekman (Amsterdam, 1955) creates monumental artworks based on textile patterns and techniques. In her work she examines the relation between art, textiles and universal human themes such as love, loss, repression and conflict. Her work places the personal experience in a larger context. Dazzling compositions zoom in and out on life, from micro level to the entire universe. Her work is always related to the world around her, in subject as well as working methods, and transcends the boundaries between autonomous and applied art. Time consuming processes as well as a close collaboration with clients and specialised craftsmen are an essential part of her work. Broekman was trained in textile art at the Rietveld Academy and the California College of Arts, Berkeley, USA. Her work has been collected by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Amsterdam Museum, the Textile Museum in Tilburg and the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum in New York.
